I always hate lugging my entire set of keys out to the pool whenever we go. I really only need my house key and pool key (if you drive to your pool you also would need a car key I suppose.) I don’t need all my store loyalty cards, large keychain, mailbox key, husband’s car keys, etc. I also don’t like to risk losing my entire set of keys.
To deal with the problem, I decided to make a dedicated keychain for ‘pool use only’ but I needed to make a key chain for it. I liked the idea of a keychain that would float, in case the keys ever fell in the water (since the last thing I would want to do is free dive for my poll key.)
You can buy floating foam, neoprene or plastic keychains (usually designed for boaters) but I knew I could come up with something cuter. I have a plethora of wine corks, and knew I could whip up a bunch of keychains with just a few simple supplies.
I used some small screw eyes (I used 1 1/8 inch) and the rings off paper key labels:
You could use smaller, more decorative, screw eyes, but I used what I had on hand. If you want a little sturdier key ring you also could order split ring connectors (After I made mine I was thinking these would be a cute gift idea, but in that case I would use the ‘fancier’ key ring.)
The process is super easy. Just screw the screw eye directly into one end of the cork (I like the end that wasn’t punctured by the cork screw since it is more likely to stay in, but if you want to insert it into the damaged end, it will still work.
Once you have the eye hook secure, add the metal ring onto it.
Since I had a bunch of rings and hook eyes, I made multiple keychains:
I love how that Bogle Vineyards cork says “Over a Bottle of Many A Friend is Found” I’m going to use that keychain for my house key whenever I leave it with the neighbors!
Now you just need to add your keys:
And of course my kids wanted to do the “Float Test” and they threw the keys in the pool:
They work exactly as designed! No free diving for me!

This is a fabulous idea! And they are super cute, too. :) Too bad I don't drink, but I know the thrift shop always has a bowl of wine corks.
