Cauliflower Gratin Recipe

Hey y'all!  Mandee from The Kitchen Wife here, and I have a confession to make.  I LOVE CAULIFLOWER!  I do!  I love it raw, steamed, roasted, fried, you name it, I love it.  But since many of us are still experiencing some very cold and wet temperatures, I thought I would share with you my FAVORITE winter-time recipe for Cauliflower Gratin.

Let's Get Started!

Cauliflower Gratin:
*Prep Time:  10 min.  *Cook Time:  30 min.  *Difficulty:  Easy  *Servings: 4-6 

Ingredients:

The ingredients needed for the Cauliflower Gratin

  • 2 heads of Cauliflower, chopped
  • 1/2 Stick of Unsalted Butter
  • 1/4 c. All Purpose Flour
  • 2 c. Milk 
  • 1/4 tsp. Nutmeg
  • 2 c. Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 c. Panko Bread Crumbs
  • 1/4 c. Grated Parmesan
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
To begin you will need to preheat your oven to 375 degrees. 


A large pot on the stove.

Next you will need to place a stock pot of salted water on the stove, and bring to a boil.

A stick of butter melting in a sauce pan.

While you are waiting for the water to come to a boil you can begin the sauce for the gratin.
Melt a stick of butter in a sauce pan.

Flour being added to the melted butter.

Once the butter has melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.

Milk being added to the butter and flour mixture.

Next whisk in the milk and let simmer until it thickens.

The sauce thickening on the stove.

It should be creamy like a cheese sauce.

Nutmeg being added to the sauce.

Now turn off the heat and add the nutmeg,

Salt being added to the sauce.

Salt,

Pepper being added to the sauce.

pepper,

Shredded cheese being added to the sauce.

and ONE CUP of the shredded cheese.

All of the ingredients being whisked together.

Whisk it all together until smooth.

Cauliflower being added to the boiling water.

Now it is time to boil the cauliflower.
Add the cauliflower to the salted, boiling water.

Cook for 5 minutes.

Cheese sauce being added to bottom of the baking dish.

While the cauliflower is cooking add half of the sauce to the bottom of a greased baking dish.

The cooked cauliflower being drained.

Drain the cauliflower.

 Add the cooked cauliflower to the the baking dish.

Sauce being poured oven the cauliflower.

Pour the rest of the cheese sauce over it.

Shredded cheese being added to the baking dish.

Top with the rest of the shredded cheese.

Panko bread crumbs and Parmesan being added to the the dish.

Now sprinkle on the panko bread crumbs and grated parmesan.

Place in the preheated oven and cook for 30 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes.

And there you have it!

This may be one of the most delectably decadent things you put in your mouth this winter.  The flavor is out of this world and when you add the great texture of the crumb topping, your entire family will be begging for more!  It goes perfect with my Whole Crock Pot Chicken and Roasted Broccoli. So tonight, don't let those deep winter doldrums get you down.  Get in the kitchen and warm the souls of everyone with this great Cauliflower Gratin tonight!!

Ingredients:
  • 2 heads of Cauliflower, chopped
  • 1/2 Stick of Unsalted Butter
  • 1/4 c. All Purpose Flour
  • 2 c. Milk 
  • 1/4 tsp. Nutmeg
  • 2 c. Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 c. Panko Bread Crumbs
  • 1/4 c. Grated Parmesan Cheese.
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. 
  3. While the water is coming to a boil, melt the butter in a sauce pan, whisk in the flour, and cook for 1-2 minutes. 
  4. Next, whisk in the milk to the butter and flour mixture.  Let simmer until it thickens into a creamy sauce. 
  5. Once thick and creamy remove from heat and add the nutmeg, salt, pepper, and ONE CUP of the shredded cheese.  Whisk together until smooth.  
  6. Add the chopped cauliflower to the boiling water and cook for 5 minutes. 
  7. To a greased baking dish, pour half of the sauce into the bottom of the dish. 
  8. Drain the cooked cauliflower and add the baking dish. 
  9. Cover the cauliflower with the rest of the sauce. 
  10. Top with the rest of the shredded cheese.
  11. Top with the panko breadcrumbs and grated parmesan cheese.
  12. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes. 
  13. Remove from oven, and let rest for 10 minutes. 
  14. Serve and Enjoy!
