Tea Cup Planter

Tea Cup Planter In Kitchen

Hi there! It's Kim from Exquisitely Unremarkable again and today, I am sharing a sweet tea cup
planter. Even though I'm not a big tea drinker, I have been obsessed with tea cups forever. I just adore their sweet shapes and delicate patterns.

I have been a collector for quite some time, but living in a tiny cottage, I don't really have a lot of space to show them off. So I use them whenever possible. I drink out of my cups to make the morning a bit more special, I use them as serving pieces when entertaining, I give them away as party favors, housewarming and hostess gifts.

The one thing I hadn't done until recently, was use one as a planter. I do not have a green thumb, so I had been hesitant, but I really wanted to try.

So I hit the thrift store.

Different Styles Of Thrift Store Tea Cups

Tea cups are plentiful at the thrift store. Whether you are searching for a cup and saucer, a set or just a single piece, you can usually score them for less than a buck each. They come in a ton of different patterns, shapes, sizes and colors. There truly is something for everyone. Just grab one you like and bring it on home.

Since there are no holes in the bottom of a tea cup, I added a few small pebbles for drainage. Then I added potting soil, my plant and water.

It was simple.

Add Pebbles To Tea Cup For Drainage

The most difficult part of the process was choosing a plant. I think it's important to take the cup's style and shape into consideration when deciding what to put inside. The tea cup I chose had beautiful yellow irises on the front. I thought about adding a flowering plant, but I didn't want the actual blooms to complete with the ones painted on the tea cup.

Back to the drawing board.

I looked at a few green houseplants at the nursery, including succulents, which are all the rage, but they didn't look right either. Too structured. I needed something a little more carefree to go with the romantic lines of my tea cup.

And my house.

Looking for inspiration, I poked around my garden and dug up a bit of a creeping border plant that grows around my pond and pool

It was just right. Plus, I know it's hearty, so I have half a chance of keeping it alive.

And it was free!
